SWCCDC 2020 COVID-19 Response

To the Southwest CCDC Community:

In response to the active novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, to protect the health of our participants and communities, the Southwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition is POSTPONED.

Although many factors were involved, including discussions with Nationals, ultimately this decision was prompted by our host institution, The University of Tulsa, implementing a social distancing policy in response to a COVID-19 exposure in the campus community.

We are aware that some other regions are converting their regional competitions to virtual events, but we do not believe that converting this year’s Southwest regional to a virtual format would be successful.

We are not aware of any current plans to postpone or alter the format of Nationals. If National CCDC indeed continues as planned, the Southwest region will be represented at Nationals by the winner of our Qualifying competition. Likewise, the second place team from Qualifiers will be invited to participate in the National CCDC Wildcard round.

We encourage all teams to prioritize their health and safety, and to follow the advice of public health officials as the situation develops.

If National CCDC postpones their event, we will assess whether it is possible to organize an in-person Southwest Regional competition in time to send its winner to Nationals. Otherwise, we will identify a later date to host an in-person Southwest Invitational competition, to which all 8 teams will be invited to participate in all of the elements of an in-person Regional CCDC competition.

It saddens all of the organizers to make this decision, as CCDC is something all of us look forward to every year. We know you’re disappointed, too. But we hope that by holding a full-blown, in person competition later in the year, we can make the best of a bad situation while prioritizing the health and safety of our participants. This will also give our students, partners, and sponsors a chance to get the full value of the after-hours events including the recruiting fair. We do not yet have a date identified for the Invitational competition, but we will provide updates as we know more.
